Traveling Trunk Educator Resource - Education Outreach Committee

Traveling Trunks

The OCTA Traveling Trunks have been made possible by a generous grant from Union Pacific Railroad to the Elko Nevada Trails Center. These trunks can be borrowed by educators free of cost to be used in the classroom as a physical representation of Western Migration history. We suggest they are used in conjunction with OCTA’s digitized journals and our movie In Pursuit of a Dream to be able to best present this period of history in a primary resource format. For curriculum ideas please feel free to study the Independence School District curriculum which is available on the OCTA National website.

Some items found in the truck include:

  • Maps

  • Sewing kit

  • Sundial compass

  • Telescope

  • Candles

  • Rope

  • Hardtack

  • A lantern

  • Children’s toys and clothing accessories

  • Portable desk, inkwell and pen

  • Blank journals

  • Coffee grinder

  • Pails & dishes

  • Wooden barrel
